Mark Collins | WJXT Ch.4 Meteorologist

Mark will speak about the unique mechanics that made this hurricane season so extreme and why Irma caused the St. Johns river to swell to record levels. Mark covered the record 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons at First Coast News and then moved across the river to WJXT in 2010. Prior to settling in Jax, he worked in hurricane alley, anchoring weather on Miami's WTVJ and in the weather forecast center at Miami's WFOR. Mark received his Bachelors of Science at Florida State University. He studied meteorology there and at Mississippi State University which prepared him for Jacksonville's volatile weather patterns. Career highlights include becoming the first AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist in Jacksonville and flying aboard NOAA's hurricane hunters. Mark lives in Ponte Vedra Beach with his wife Kim and daughter Nevie.

Attention Boat Owners

For security purposes, please have any vendors you call stop by the Front Office to get a service vendor badge to be worn at all times while on property. Vendors will need to leave their ID in the front office upon receiving the badge and return the badge in exchange for their ID when leaving. Calling ahead to let us know of their arrival is also very helpful as this assures us that you sent the vendor personally. Thank you so much for your cooperation! Not only will this promote a safer environment but it will protect your property as well as the Club.

About FYC Fleet

The Florida Yacht Club is blessed with the rare combination of a rich history of boating, a well-equipped marina and staff, and an idyllic perch on the sparkling St. Johns River. It has been FYC’s mission since its inception to promote boating and that ethos remains as vibrant as ever.

FYC offers members the opportunity for power boating, sailing, kayaking, scuba diving and other aquatic activities and also hosts numerous social cruises and major sailing regattas, including the 2012 J24 North American Championship. In addition to its year-round competition schedule, FYC’s Youth Sailing Program is in full swing during the summer months, when the highly successful sailing camps become an energetic and ubiquitous presence on the Club’s waterfront. Positioned 23 miles from the Intracoastal Waterway, FYC provides fishing and cruising enthusiasts direct access to the Atlantic Ocean.

FYC boasts two marinas that contain 73 wet slips, 18 dry lifts and 38 dry storage spots, together offering boaters space for 129 crafts, in addition to small sailboat storage. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic Dock Masters are on duty from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Tuesday through Sunday to accommodate FYC Members’ and guests’ boating needs.

Regattas & Cruising

The Florida Yacht Club boasts a rich history of boating and yachting, and that legacy lives on today with annual competitive sailing regattas and exciting social cruises. FYC is proud of its stature as the sailing capital of Northeast Florida, a position which is evidenced by the multitude of regattas featured at the club each year. FYC serves as host to such youth regattas as the Equinox Regatta, the Cowford Cup, and the King’s Day Regatta. FYC also hosts national Regattas like the Orange Peel Regatta, and is often selected to host major championships such as the 2012 J-24 North American Championship. The club’s own J-24 sailors can be seen racing on the St. Johns River on Wednesday evenings during much of the year.

The Florida Yacht Club also organizes numerous social cruises throughout the year. Many of the club’s boating enthusiasts gather for outings like the Offshore Fishing Tournament in St. Augustine, the St. Johns River Antique Boat Cruise, and the Memorial Day and Labor Day cruises to Ft. George. Indeed, excitement abounds at The Florida Yacht Club for boaters of all stripes!

Aquatic Recreation

The Florida Yacht Club offers opportunities for a wide range of water sports. In addition to our 420s, Optis, and Lasers, there are kayaks and paddle boards available for members to take out on the water. FYC also offers educational opportunities in the form of scuba diving, safe boating, and waterman’s courses. From sailing to scuba diving to kayaking, The Florida Yacht Club is the epicenter of much of the aquatic action that takes place on the St. Johns River and beyond!
